Trouble updating from 5.0.3 to 5.1.0

Up until today automatic updates from within webUI worked as expected. Currently running 5.0.3 trying to update to 5.1.0 and running into various issues.

• opening Administration and pressing the CHECK FOR UPDATES button results in the button informing me Error. Please try again later.
• looking at https://matomo.org/faq/on-premise/update-matomo/ I saw that the permissions value should be 777 which it was not for the piwik folder, so changed permission and opted to Apply to Enclosed in FTP client, but error is persisting
• tried manual update steps which resulted in a 5.0.3 installation persisting

Since this is an old installation which still resides in a “piwik” folder, I am not sure if I modified the manual update steps correctly.

The Administration page shows an error which is not really actionable: Oops… there was a problem during the request. Maybe the server had a temporary issue, or maybe you requested a report with too much data. Please try again.

What could I do to debug this?
